James Griffing wrote to his fiancee, J. Augusta Goodrich, in Owego, New York, from somewhere along the banks of the Illinois River in Illinois, and, some days later, from Milton, Missouri. Griffing, a Methodist minister, described the daily routine of his overland journey from Indianapolis, Indiana, to the Kansas Territory.
