The four bottle stoppers were recovered during excavations in 1966 by Kansas Historical Society Archeologists at historic Fort Hays in Ellis County. All four bottle stoppers are solid glass with tapered shanks and utilitarian in style. All of the shanks have been broken. Some bottle stoppers were meant to be disposed, while other could be reused. Fort Hays was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and is a State Historic Site.
