This photo taken in the summer of 1934 features Captain James C. Hughes with his son, James Renwick (on the right of his father), who is on furlough. The family would have been living in Long Beach, CA at the time. James R. Hughes was continuing the family's military tradition going back to Colonel James White Frierson Hughes. James Clark Hughes was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1888, and served in the Mexican Border Conflict, World War I, and World War II. He used an autographic camera to take pictures of friends, family, and places in the United States and Europe during World War I.
