A carte-de-visite showing the Quaker Shawnee Indian Mission located 1/2 mile east and 1/4 mile south of Merriam, Johnson County, Kansas. The mission, which faced south, was built in 1845 and razed in 1917. The three story building measured 24'x70'. The first floor or basement made of stone contained the kitchen, dining room, and cellar; the upper stories made of frame had school rooms and in each end, dormitories, and four rooms in the middle for the families.
