This photograph shows the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway box depot in Anna, Kansas. The one-story wooden structure and tracks were once part of the Northern Division, Afton Sub. Division at milepost 110.8. Before the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway Company merged in 1901 with the Kansas City, Fort Scott, and Memphis Railway, Anna had been know as Pawnee Station. Established on January 31, 1871 Pawnee Station, located southwest of Fort Scott, Kansas, had been a thriving coal mining community. For a number of years the incorporated town served as a major shipping point for coal. When the mining industry came to a close and the population declined, Pawnee Station's post office was discontinued on April 30, 1945.
