Leavenworth Kansas Feb 23d. 1860.
Dr. Hamp.
We have filed a demurrer in the case of Smoot Russell & Co against
us. They
probably can not get judgment for a couple of months. So you need not
fret at
present.
I sincerely regret your failure. By rejecting you, however, Buchanan
has paid
you the only compliment in his power to bestow--the damned old scoundrel!
Like
a toad, he grows more ugly and venomous with increasing age. If the devil
dont
get him, then there's no use keeping a devil.
The feeling on the subject here is intense, and looks as if the
democracy of
Leavenworth and the safety of the Union, were both in peril. But don't
trouble
yourself, for it will all come out right in another year. Remember me
kindly
to your Father--
Yours
Thomas Ewing Jr
