Moore, an anti-slavery Democrat, wrote to Major Jesse Morin, register of the federal land office in Fort Scott, Kansas Territory, to seek Morin's support in Moore's bid for the Democratic Party nomination for attorney general. Moore was unsuccessful at the October 25, 1859, Democratic Convention in his effort to secure the nomination.
