Lawrence Oct. 3 1857 My Dear S.
I sent you Thursday a letter containing $150 draft & saying that I would meet you at St. Louis, Barnum’s hotel, on the 20th inst. to make such purchases as you might wish. I write this line lest the others should miscarry-
Daniel Foster & Mr Nute are going east to lecture etc. this Winter. Foster is mad with me & Lane because he couldn’t carry his policy in the Grasshopper Falls convention. He lectured here last evening & had to give us a cut. He may want some horses again for nothing.
Today is rainy, gloomy & cold. Wish you were here to enjoy the loneliness with me. I have been at work today what time I have been alone fixing up my books etc.
I have taken an inventory of the property & recorded it all in a book so that if I die it can be found. It amounts without including the claim or float,

except one thousand dollars, to $44000 – at a fair estimate – If I can get the claim or float I intend to fix what I have so as to get a good income from it & then get quiet with my good wife. She has seen trouble enough & so have I.
Affectionately your own C
Love to E. & friends
