Ridgeway, Shawnee Co. Feb. 25 1859
Hon. J. A. Halderman Dear Sir
Yours of the 13 inst. has just reached me. I am astonished to hear that you have not been permitted to redeem your shares in Lecompton which were sold in October last for taxes. I heard that Judge Lecompte, Woodson and some others had been sold out for non-payment of the first and second assessments amounting to $17.50 per share, besides the third $10. But I

supposed that they or any other person, thus sold out, could redeem the property sold I have paid $175.00 in taxes on my shares: that is, all but the last assessment. And now, if my shares have been sold; and if I am not permitted to redeem them, I declare before God and the world, that I am ready to join any company that may be organized, and deal out justice to the Lecompton Town Company according to the rules of equity as recognized and administered by Judge Lynch

Let us try law first, and if that is too short, then appeal to judge Lynch.
What is your opinion as to the legality of the sale? Ask judge Lecompte for his opinion. You say you don’t think you shall annoy them about your shares. I think you are wrong. Let us make up a purse and litigate to the bitter end. Let us give them hell, in court, and in the newspapers – let us give them one incessant hell fire from this day hence forth and forever. Where are Mathias

Feb 25. 1859 Estin, Joe Anderson and all the share holders? Are they sold out too?
Let us ascertain who they all are that have been swindled, and organize a concerted movement and make it tell
I think little Bob Stevens, law partner of Gov. Shannon, is the mischief making monkey that has caused all this difficulty. I think a good cow hiding would make him grow better and bigger Please address me at “Ridgeway, Shawnee Co. K. T.” Your Friend
