Leavenworth, Kansas, Apl. 9, 1859.
Dear Sir. Our Board met here a couple of days ago and I telegraphed you the result of their meeting. I was absent at Lawrence on Monday Tuesday, & Wednesday, on account of which the meeting of the Board was postponed, & the answer to your dispatch consequently delayed.
The impression seems to be that we shall be compelled to connect with the Hannibal & St Jos: rail road, by the shortest & cheapest route to Bucklin or Easton. In that case, Platte City & Plattsburgh will be left to the right of the line some distance. But we dare not survey a line leaving out those towns until we get a charter, lest the people there either defeat the bill or name those places as points

through which the road will be compelled to pass. Hence our delay in causing the survey to be made-- We expect to have it done however as soon as the charter is obtained.
Major Hunt was here yesterday, & thought our Board acted wisely in deferring the survey. He declined stating the amount of charge for the reconnaissance made by you, & said that the matter should be settled with you. Please draw on Saml. Harsh, Treasr., for the amt. sending the bill & draft to me, & I will collect & remit.
Please keep me advised if convenient, as to the progress of the Platte County rail road matters.
I am Very truly, yours Tho: Ewing Jr
E. Peabody Esq St Louis Mo
