Thomas Ewing, Jr.'s law partner and brother-in-law, William Tecumseh Sherman, who would gain military fame and glory as a general during the Civil War, wrote from Leavenworth to H. E. Ring in Dover, Tennessee, regarding land and other prospects in Kansas. "Near this city now containing 1000 people," wrote Sherman, "the land is very high ranging at about 100 an acre down to 4 or $5 as you remove back to the high prairie." Sherman offered to help this "old school mate" locate in Kansas if he so desired, but he advised that Ring should not do so if he were already doing well back home, "as there are many here seeking place. The climate too is not so genial as that of Tennessee."
