Eli Thayer to Mr. [William] Barnes

Item Description Bookbag Share

Worcester Aug 1st 1856 Mr. Barnes
Dear Sir
I have recd a dispatch from Chicago informing me that the Committee has unanimously appointed me to superintend the organizing of the Free States
It is a source of neglect that this was not done sooner if to be done at all-
We have lost valuable time – Now we must work –
I shall leave N. Y. to your excellent Committee.
You have the plan which I propose to apply. Improve it if you can but allow
no delay - You must have an assistant Secretary at once & I hope you will procure a good man who will relieve you at least from the labor of writing & perhaps of dictating details.
I need say nothing to you of the importance of carrying this cause to every hearth-stone in the free States - I am happy in the conviction that you appreciate the cause of Kansas in its fullest extent & therefore I propose to leave N. Y. to you & your excellent Committee – my time will now be given to the States which have not yet any State Committees – first in N. E. & the West

& afterwards Pa. & New Jersey.
We hope to have State Committees in N. E. in each State in ten days & then without delay a perfect organization -
If your Committee has room to add to its members I think you will do well to add one man from the Shire Town of each County retaining your present quorum This will facilitate the organizing of Counties –
Tell the Republicans this is the way to check Fremont All the Clerks must work for us
Truly Yours Eli Thayer
