This set of photographs show workers removing an eagle from the G.A.R., (Grand Army of the Republic), auditorium inside the Memorial Building in Topeka, Kansas. The four story building designed by state architect Charles Chandler was built as a memorial to the Kansas soldiers and sailors of the Civil War. The structure would also house the Kansas State Historical Society's collections. When competed in 1914 the Grand Army of the Republic , (G.A.R), the Kanas State Historical Society, Sons of Veterans, Ladies of the G.A.R., Women's Relief Corp, Spanish American War Veterans, and the Academy of Science occupied the facility. The military organizations eventually disbanded and the Academy of Science move to the University of Kansas. In 1984, the Kansas Museum of History moved to a new facility west of Topeka and in 1995 the State Archives Division moved as well to the west side of Topeka next to the museum. The building still stands today and was added to the National Register of Historical Places on July 17, 1975. Since 2000, Memorial Hall has served as headquarters for the Kansas Attorney General and the Kansas Secretary of State.
