This postcard shows the log cabin of Dr. Brewster Higley, author of "Home on the Range." Higley moved to Kansas around 1871 and established a homestead near Beaver Creek in Smith County, Kansas. He wrote the poem "My Western Home" while living in a dugout before building the one-story long cabin in 1875. Higley and composer Dan Kelley set to music in 1873 one of the most popular songs ever written "Home on the Range". On June 30, 1947, "Home on the Range" was officially recognized as the state song of Kansas. The structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Place in 1973 and restored in 2013 to its 1870s appearance.
