These drill fragments were recovered during a survey of the Kermit Hayes No. 2 archeological site in Rice County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 2020. Drills were used to bore holes in materials softer than the drill itself, such as hides, shell, wood, or soft stone. The Kermit Hayes No. 2 site is a Great Bend aspect (ancestral to the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes) village with features labeled as a council circle, four large oblong houses surrounding a central space.
