This finial was recovered from Fort Wallace in Wallace County in the vicinity of the Officer's Quarters. A finial is an ornamental piece generally at the top of an object. This one may have been at the end of a flag staff. Fort Wallace was built in 1865 along the Smoky Hill Trail and abandoned in 1882. Archeologists from the Kansas Historical Society conducted excavations at the fort in 1997.
