This lead shot (ammunition) was recovered from Fort Wallace in Wallace County near the magazine, an area used for ammunition storage. The lead shot is an appropriate size to have been used in a pistol. Fort Wallace was built in 1865 along the Smoky Hill Trail and abandoned in 1882. Archeologists from the Kansas Historical Society conducted excavations at the fort in 1997.
