Shown is a rim sherd from the Fanning site, an Early Contact period Kansa village in Doniphan County. The sherd was collected around the turn of the century by a historian/collector and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1925. The surface is decorated with vertical cord marks and crenellation, a serrated outline, below the lip. The Fanning site was a Late Ceramic to early Contact Period village occupied by the Kansa. The decoration on this vessel was not the typical for these people and may have been traded into the village.
