This brass finial was recovered by Kansas Historical Society archeologists during excavation at historic Fort Hays in Ellis County. A finial is an ornamental piece generally at the top of an object. This one may have sat atop of a flag staff carried by a standard-bearer. Fort Hays was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and is a State Historic Site.
