This LGBTQ Diversity Pride flag was designed and made by Gilbert Baker. Baker, an artist and activist, was born in Chanute, Kansas, in 1951 and grew up in Parsons. As a gay man and an Army veteran living in San Fransisco, Baker became involved in both the gay rights and anti-war movements and made banners for both causes. In 1978, he created the Rainbow Flag as a positive symbol for the gay community. It first flew at the United Nations Plaza in San Francisco to commemorate the Gay Freedom Day Parade. Since then, the flag has become an internationally-recognized symbol. Baker made this flag in 2017, shortly before his death.
