These toothbrush fragments were recovered from the Baker store in Morris County by the Emporia State Teacher's College (now Emporia State University) archeological field school in 1973. Shown is a toothbrush head fragment with holes for bristles (often hog bristles) and fragments of two different handles. The handle in the center has the advertising "QUALITE SUPER -URE" and the handle on the right has a makers mark surrounded by "BROSSES DE PARIS." The Baker store and nearby house were situated along the Santa Fe trail. The owner, A. I. Baker, was murdered in 1862 by "Bloody Bill" Anderson and his cohorts, who also burned the store and house.
