This photograph shows a string of refrigerator cars being filled with ice by the new icing machine operating at the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railway Company yard, in Argentine, Kansas. This single machine fills the bunkers and top ices (Body icing) the cars. The icing machine moves on its own rail of approximately 3,700 feet of track. The refrigerated cars are labeled SFRD (Santa Fe Refrigerator Department), the ATSF Railway Company logo, and Grand Canyon Line. The numbers of the SFRD cars that are legible are 11071 and 11051. In these earliest forms of refrigerated cars, air would be blown over the ice to keep produce cool.
