This pipestone pipe blank was found along the Kansas River valley and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1925. The soft material was in the early stages of pipe production: the outer form of the bowl had been shaped, but the bowl opening had just been started. Pipes were used during trade negotiations and to mark special occasions. In Kansas, these pipes generally were made by American Indians between 1350 to 1850 CE.
