This pipestone pipe bowl was collected from the Doniphan site in Doniphan County and donated in 2018 to the Kansas Historical Society. The soft, fine-grained material of the pipestone enabled the carver to shape the pipe. This pipe is unfinished as the holes have not been completely drilled nor has the surface been smoothed. In Kansas, these pipes generally were carved by American Indians between 1350 to 1850 CE, though they continue to be made today. The Doniphan site was a large Kansa village with a Central Plains tradition occupation as well. On maps, it is the earliest identifiable Indian village in Kansas.
