This broken maul was collected from the Wullscheleger site in Marshall County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1961. The site was occupied periodically throughout the Early, Middle and Late Ceramic periods. The artifact was used as a hammer. The groove around the middle of the maul would have been used to haft it onto a handle. It is made from metamorphic rock and was manufactured by pecking and grinding it into its final shape.
