This brass button was excavated at Fort Zarah in 1969 by Kansas Historical Society archeologists. The "Rich Orange" and "Warranted" back marks refer to the color and quality rating of the gilt button by button manufacturers. The button has a stand up shank attachment. The fort was a small outpost on the Santa Fe trail in Barton County occupied from 1864 to 1869. The trading post, where this button was located, burned in 1868.
