This partial brass belt buckle plate was excavated at Fort Zarah in 1969 by Kansas Historical Society archeologists. The fragment is the inner oval of what was a rectangular belt buckle plate. The artifact is quite heavy as the backing appears to be of lead. The fort was a small outpost on the Santa Fe trail in Barton County occupied from 1864 to 1869. The trading post building within the fort, where this buckle was located, burned in 1868.
