These letters, dated July 6, 1887, are from the Labette County, Kansas Clerk's office regarding the county surveyor to Kansas Governor John Martin. Both letters verify the vacancy of county surveyor due to the death of the current county surveyor, H. H. Deulter. One letter is a signed petition and the other is from the county clerk, W. W. Cook, appointing A. B. Bushnell as Deulter's successor. Labette County was organized on March 10, 1867.
