These letters, spanning 1886 to 1887, are from the residents and offices of Decatur County, Kansas regarding county affairs to Kansas Governor John Martin. The letters discuss a cycle of resignation, appointment, failure to qualify, and the reappointment of another individual to the office of coroner as well as the county surveyor. With the failed qualifications of the elected county surveyor, the rest of the letters are recommendations and applications for the reappointment of a county surveyor. Decatur county was founded on December 11, 1879 and named for Commodore Stephen Decatur, of War of 1812 fame.
