These letters are from residents of Allen County, Kansas regarding the vacancy of their sheriff position to Kansas Governor John Martin. Many recommend candidates including D. D. Britton and E. D. Cain. D. D. Britton was elected sheriff. Britton succeeded John L. Brown who died unexpectedly. One of 33 original counties established in 1855, Allen County was named after William Allen, who was an Ohio senator and governor.
