A letter from E. F. Henderson writes to Kansas Governor St. John to ask who has the power to appoint Census Taker for the County of Sumner. In the letter Henderson requests to be appointed the position. In the late 19th century it was the responsibility of each census taker also referred to as enumerator to personally visit each dwelling in their subdivision to obtain the correct number of each member or person occupying the dwelling.
