Many of the documents in this file pertain to vacancies as well as requests for appointments in Rice County, Kansas. There are several letters to Kansas Governor St. John requesting for certain persons to be appointed a position within the county such as Surveyor and Probate Judge. There is a letter of resignation from the present County Surveyor informing the Governor he cannot serve because he does not have the instruments or chains. Additionally, on May 4, 1882 there is a letter from S. H. Jones of Lyons, Kansas thanking the Governor for the appointment as Probate Judge of Rice County.
