The documents in this file mostly concern railroad lands but include discussion of Native American and public lands. This is not a complete description of the file. A letter on March 18, 1873, requests Kansas Governor Osborn return list number five containing information of the 27,732.50 acres of land to the Missouri, Kansas, Texas Railroad. A letter on U.S. Attorney, George R. Peck, on February 6, 1874, informs the Governor that he has been directed to commence proceedings against certain railroad claims and asks for information the Governor may have. A letter from the B. R. Cowen, Acting Secretary of the Department of Interior, states he has examined the case of the Missouri River, Ft. Scott, and Gulf Railroad Company versus Leavenworth, Lawrence, Galveston Railroad Company case involving the title to certain lands in the Independence Land District Kansas and affirms Governor Osborn's claims.
