A letter on September 12, 1872, from W. VanBuren, U. S. Commissioner to International Expositions, asks the Governor to present at the Vienna Exposition a representation of the Common School Instruction adopted in the United States. During the 19th century, common schools, also known as public schools, typically taught reading, writing, and arithmetic.
