This folder on U.S. Sanitary Commission Fair comes from the Correspondence series of the Governor Thomas Carney Papers. Thomas Carney was Kansas' second state Governor, serving from 1863 to 1865. He was born near Tipton, Delaware County, Ohio in 1824 and came to Kansas in search of better health care and new business opportunities. Thomas Carney and his business partner Thomas C. Stevens were the first to open a wholesale house in Leavenworth, Kansas. This record contains several requests for the governor's autograph for the Sanitary Fair to be held in the city of New York. Another document includes the governors' signature. There is a circular letter from Arch'd Baxter, the Chairman of Committee on Produce, he writes to inform each of the thirty-four states of the union that they are to exhibit some production for the Sanitary Commission Fair. Lastly, there is a pamphlet titled, The Philanthropic Results of the War in America by L.P. Brockett, given to the sanitary commission as a donation to be sold for their benefit. In this letter, he also requests the governor to forward the statistical pages to officers who can fill in the amount expended or contributed from the state.
