This folder on Public land comes from the Correspondence series of the Governor Charles Robinson Papers. This record contains information regarding the appointment of S.E. Hoffman of Woodson County as Agent Select of Public Lands in 1861. Also, this includes documents, in 1862, that discuss the negotiation or leasing of lands. These documents are important because at the time Kansas is newly admitted into the Union, and lands granted to Kansas by congress are being determined. Charles Robinson was Kansas' first state Governor, serving from 1861 to 1863. He was born in Massachusetts in 1818 and headed the New England Emigrant Aid Company's first colony to Kansas Territory in 1854.
