This folder on Military Affairs comes from the Correspondence series of the Governor Charles Robinson Papers. This record includes petitions from several counties to appoint the following positions, Inspector General for the state of Kansas and Major of the Squadron of Calvary. They also contain, resolutions passed at a meeting at Mound City, Kansas. There is a letter from Captain Horrand acknowledging Kansas Governor Charles Robinsons' request for the removal of General James Lane's Brigade, and the transportation of the stores. The letter also describes potential Indian retaliation at the frontier and the request to send someone to discover if this is true. A message from Lieutenant Sauil A. Hiawatha of Kingman, expressing to the governor the people's desire to have military company stationed close by Atchison and Doniphan counties for protection against Missourians and Jayhawkers. Rosters of the eleventh and thirteenth regiment in Kansas. These documents are important because at the time Kansas was still in the process of becoming organized. Charles Robinson was Kansas' first state Governor, serving from 1861 to 1863. He was born in Massachusetts in 1818 and headed the New England Emigrant Aid Company's first colony to Kansas Territory in 1854.
