This folder on Indian Affairs comes from the Correspondence series of the Governor Charles Robinson Papers. This record includes a letter to Major General Fremont from Kansas Governor Charles Robinson on the report of Indians quiet on the west border. Reports from W.R. Griffith to Governor Robinson on the Kaws, Osages, and Cherokee Indians near White Water Creek in Butler County. Reports share there is a fear that the Osages and Kaws will take revenge on the theft of ponies by desperados. Additionally, some settlers fear the Cherokees will retaliate against them because of the liberation of their slaves and the theft of their cattle. Charles Robinson was Kansas' first state Governor, serving from 1861 to 1863. He was born in Massachusetts in 1818 and headed the New England Emigrant Aid Company's first colony to Kansas Territory in 1854.
