This folder on Bond, State comes from the Correspondence series of the Governor Charles Robinson Papers. This record includes A letter ordered by the Kansas Senate to Kansas Governor Charles Robinson concerning selling seven percent Kansas bonds in New York, 1861. A letter by Governor Robinson to Duncan Sherman & Co. bankers in New York inquiring what $150,000 of seven percent state bonds can be negotiated for in New York. A telegraph response from Duncan Sherman on April 23, 1861. This is important because the first impeachment of a Kansas governor resulted from the issuance of state bonds. Additionally, during mid-1861, selling bonds to eastern financers proved to be difficult. Charles Robinson was Kansas' first state Governor, serving from 1861 to 1863. He was born in Massachusetts in 1818 and headed the New England Emigrant Aid Company's first colony to Kansas Territory in 1854.
