This postcard from 1916 features William Jennings Bryan and Walt Mason during a Bryan visit to Emporia. Bryan was on his way to Morris County for a Chautauqua tour appearance. He made a brief stop in Emporia to visit Mason, a friend and former neighbor. Mason worked for the Emporia Gazette, but was nationally known for his syndicated "prose poems." The inscription on the back of the postcard indicates that the photo was taken on September 2, 1916. However, a September 1 article in the Gazette reported that Bryan had visited Emporia earlier that day. The article also identifies the photographer as Ben Morgan, of the Morris Drug Store.
