This maul was excavated in 1986 during a highway salvage project at the Mem site undertaken by Kansas Historical Society archeologists and Kansas Anthropological Association volunteers. The artifact was used as a hammer. The groove around the middle of the maul would have been used to haft it onto a handle. It is made from metamorphic rock present in the glacial till. One end has a rounded poll with a small spall. The other end has a slightly convex surface. The maul was made by pecking and grinding it into its final shape. The Mem site, in Marion County, is a Great Bend aspect, ancestral Wichita village.
