This series of photographs represent the F5 1966 tornado and the damage it caused in Topeka, Kansas with winds traveling over 250 miles per hour. Ernst F. Tonsing took one photograph at 7:07 p.m. near Valencia Road as the tornado was forming near Topeka. The other photographs in the series represents the aftermath of the tornado as Ernst and his father, Reverand Ernest F. Tonsing, traveled throughout Topeka checking on members of the First Lutheran Church. The tornado traveled through the heart of the city destroying eight blocks of the city and either destroying or damaging every building at Washburn University.
