This nearly complete sewing machine oil was excavated at Fort Hays in Ellis County. The bottle held Sperm Whale Oil, traces of which remain, that was used to lubricate fine machinery, such as sewing machines. The bottle would have been closed by a cork. Fort Hays was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and is a State Historic Site.
