This is a photograph of the 1963 Oklahoma City 89ers minor league baseball club from the Class AAA Pacific Coast League. The team, which was affiliated with the Houston Colt .45s, won the PCL South Division title (84-74), then defeated the North Division champion Spokane Indians, 4 games to 3, to claim the league championship. The 89ers' roster included three players who had (or would have) a Kansas connection--pitcher Jim Golden (seated in second row from the bottom, third from the left); first baseman Bob Boyd (seated in second row from the bottom, second from the left); and, pitcher Tom Borland (standing in the second row from the top, second from the left).

Jim Golden, of rural Topeka, appeared in 28 games for the 89ers, finishing with a 9-11 record and a 3.58 ERA. Bob Boyd moved to Wichita after his professional baseball career to become a bus driver and to play for the Wichita Dreamliners semipro team. In 1963, he had a .251 batting average for the 89ers, had two home runs and drove in 23 runs in 67 games. Tom Borland was raised in Oklahoma, but he was born in El Dorado and, like Boyd, he also played for the Wichita Dreamliners semipro team after his professional career. His record with the 89ers in 1963 was 6-3 and a 2.48 ERA in 41 games. A complete list of the players in the photo includes the following. Seated in the front row are (l to r): Butch Mixon (p); Danny Murphy (of); Glenn Vaughan (ss); George Williams (3b); Jim Mahoney (2b); and John Bado (bat boy). In the second row are (l to r): Manuel Montejo (p); Bob Boyd (1b); Jim Golden (p); Grady Hatton (mgr); Jim Campbell (c); Dave Giusti (p); and Connie Grob (p). Standing in the third row are: Al Heist (of); Tom Borland (p); Joe Wooten (c); Ben Johnson (p); Von McDaniel (if); Russ Kemmerer (p); and Ralph Salvon (trainer). In the top row are: Gordon Jones (p); Dave Roberts (1b); Dave Gerard (p); Jerry Nelson (p); Jim Dickson (p); and Carroll Hardy (of).
