This photo from 1968 shows the Gatehouse Apartment Bombers semipro baseball team from Topeka. Kneeling in front are (l to r): Barry Gentry (of): Richard Walthal (c); Lenny Bozic (of); John Blakely (ut); Mario Zambrano (3b); Gayle Miles (p); and Gary McGir (trainer). Standing in the back are (l to r); Fred Berckefeldt (of); Richard Taylor (2b); Lowell Knutsen (ss); Norman Emerson (1b); Jim Golden (p); Michael Mattiace (p); and Jim Redmond (p). Jim Golden, Michael Mattiace, and Mario Zambrano all had professional baseball careers. Golden's pro career spanned the period 1954-1964, including 69 game appearances in the major leagues as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers (1960-1961) and the Houston Colt .45s (1962-1963). Before his professional career, Golden was the pitching ace for Silver Lake High School and the Mosby-Macks, the American Legion team which represented Topeka's Capitol Post 1. He led both the Silver Lake and Mosby-Mack teams to state titles--the Eagles in 1953 and 1954, and the Mosby-Macks, in 1952 and 1953. Mattiace and Zambrano both were regulars on the 1961 Topeka Reds minor league team that captured the Three-I League pennant.
