These legal documents relate to the U. S. District Court of the Kansas Territory, Second District's case against Owen T. Bassett for contempt on August 13, 1857 in Lecompton, Kansas Territory. Bassett was summoned to act as a juror for the Second District Court but failed to appear. A series of writs were issued in 1857, 1858, and 1859 ordering Bassett to appear before the court and explain his absence or pay a fee of ten dollars. After Bassett failed to appear to answer for the charge of contempt, a judgement of $20.50 was issued against him on October 12, 1858.
