This is a grand jury indictment of Richard Ballard was issued by the Third District Court of the Kansas Territory during the court's May term of 1860. Ballard was accused of selling liquor to two members of the Miami tribe, Thomas Lafontaine and James Jebeaux, on March 1, 1860 on Miami tribal lands in the Kansas Territory. The Miami land was located in present-day Miami and Linn counties. It was illegal to sell alcohol on Native American lands in the United States from 1832-1953.
