This pipestone pipe blank was found in Atchison County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1925. The soft material was in the early stages of pipe production: the outward form of the bowl had been shaped, but the bowl opening had just been started. Pipes were used during trade negotiations and to mark special occasions.
