This is a studio portrait of Louise Gongell, the maternal grandmother of photographer Louis Palenske. Louise and her husband, Jacob, lived with the Palenske family at Alma and are both buried on the Palenske homestead. The reverse of the photo shows Palenske's studio logo, and these words are written, "Grossmutter Gongell (sic) Caroline Palenske's mother." Funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission through the Kansas State Historical Records Advisory Board.
