Two different tokens were recovered during the 2016 Kansas Archeological Training Program at the Last Chance Store in Council Grove. One was an aluminum 1 mill tax token from Oklahoma bearing the wording "Consumer's Tax Token Oklahoma" on one side and "For Old Age Pensions" on the other side. That token dates to 1936-1937. Tokens let consumers pay sales tax on cheap items without being overtaxed. This one-mill token represented 1/1000th of a cent. The other token was perhaps part of a promotional offer dating to 1855-1861. Wording on one side notes "Foster & Parry Grand Rapids" with a depiction of a cook stove, while the reverse states "Wholesale Iron Hardware Dealers" with a depiction of a padlock. The Last Chance Store was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
